Cuisine

One aspect of Kahramanmaras' cultural heritage is its cuisine and sweet desserts. Tarhana, ground wheat, dehusked wheat, starch is prepared for the winter and foods such peppers, eggplants, marrows, okra and beans are dried and stored. Soup varieties such as tarhana, sour soup, ground lentil soup, yoghurt ground soup, Maras trotters soup; meatball varieties such as ring meatballs, kisir meatballs, kernel meatballs, somelek meatballs, stewed meatballs, sour meatballs, yoghurt meatballs, plain meatballs, sour palm meatballs; rice and pastry dishes such as keshk dish (ground dish), Maras rice, chicken rice, cheese and curd pastry and bayram buns are amongst local specialities.

As a sweet, the famous Maras ice cream cannot be overlooked. Peanut butter, flour salami, and fruit jelly salami are some of the other well-known sweets.
